The Ministry of health and family welfare,India on Thursday quoted a study conducted in 25 cities claiming that half of Indians don’t wear a mask at all. Only 50% of people wear a mask and among them only 7% wear it correctly. Additionally, according to the study, among the 50% of mask wearers 64% cover the mouth but not the nose, 20% have it on the chin and 2% have a mask on their neck.
Mask wearing has been the norm for more than a year now, and despite several warnings and continual surge of the coronavirus, half the country’s population is still not following the basic Covid protocol. As the second wave has hit India since the month of April, there has been a huge surge of cases in urban, semi-urban, rural and tribal areas.
The second wave proves to be more fatal due to cases with new variants of Covid19. At a time like this mask wearing has been given highest emphasis by doctors and health professionals. Many doctors have also recommended the practice of double masks as new variants of the virus spread more quickly and are more infectious.
On Thursday a press briefing was conducted by the Ministry of Health to discuss the updates on Covid19, preparedness, and actions being taken. During the press briefing of the health ministry, Joint secretary Lav Agarwal informed that 8 states in India have more than 1 lakh active cases, 9 of them have case count between 50,000 to 1 lakh, and the rest 19 states have less than 50,000 cases.
He also expressed concern over states like Karnataka and West Bengal that currently show a positivity rate of over 25%. Following the surge, some states like Karnataka and Kerala have already extended lockdowns in the respective states for a few more weeks.
According to the data by the Health ministry states like Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Mizoram have risen in cases and a rise in positivity rate in the last 3 weeks.
In India, 2,59,551 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours which is below the 300,000 mark. The active caseload in India is 3,027,925, however, India has reported close to 4000 deaths in a single day. The total active cases in India has a slight dip since the previous days but the number of deaths in a single day has increased.
