Punith, a 22-year-old Dalit youth from Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka Dalit was allegedly forced to drink urine by the police sub-inspector of Gonibeedu police station named Arjun.
Punith was arrested by the Gonibeedu Police on May 10, on account of an oral complaint by the locals for raising a ruckus between a couple. He alleged, “I was taken to the police station and beaten up. My hands and legs were tied. I was thirsty and asked for water; else, I would have died. The cops made a man urinate on the floor and said I would have to lick the urine if I want to get out. I did it and came out. The cops also abused my Dalit community while beating me up in the police station.” Such instances of atrocities and hate crimes against people from the marginalized sections of our society are nothing new now.
The matter received public attention after the victim wrote to Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood seeking justice in this matter and demanded action against the cops for this heinous act. Responding to the turn of events, the Chikkamagaluru district superintendent of police has ordered a departmental probe against the police sub-inspector concerned. “The sub-inspector has been transferred to another police station and a probe has been initiated,” he said.
