Veteran actor Neena Gupta, in her recent autobiography ‘Sach Kahun Toh’, revealed a time when she was asked to spend the night in exchange for a role by a renowned South producer.
Addressing the issue of casting couch in her book, Neena Gupta wrote, “Now, does the casting couch exist, and have I ever had to sit (sleep? sounds uncomfortable) on it? The answer is: Yes, it exists, and no I have never experienced it. I always saw it for what it was – a sexual favour offered in exchange for something that might not be what you imagined.”
But, she did recall an incident where she was offered to spend the night with a renowned South producer in exchange for a role. She revealed that she declined it and had to face humiliation by him later which made her angry. Tied between being a struggling actress trying to build a career and speaking up against him, she chose her career. After all these years of hardwork and fame, she has finally spoken up against him, even though she has restrained from revealing his identity for legal purposes.
Talking about the incident, she said that she had gotten a call by a producer to meet her for a role in Mumbai. Excited to grab an opportunity at hand, she agreed to meet him at the Sun-n-Sand hotel at Juhu after one of her performances in the Prithvi Theatres that was close by. She said she sensed something negative when she phoned him from the hotel lobby where he asked her to walk up to his room instead. ‘My basic instinct told me to not go upstairs. That I should ask him to come down to the lobby instead’, she wrote.
