In an attempt to fight against gender norms, male teachers in Spain have been wearing skirts to school The movement was launched by Maths teacher Jose Piñas in November after one of his students was expelled for wearing a skirt to school.
Manuel Ortega and Borja Velaquez, teachers of a primary school in Valladolid also joined the movement when one of their students was bullied and called homophobic slurs when he wore an anime t shirt.
The primary school teachers said they were horrified by the level of bullying that the student had to face, thus they felt the need to join the movement and wore skirts for the month of May.
Ortega wrote on Twitter,”A school that educates with respect, diversity, co-education and tolerance. Dress how you want! We join the campaign #clotheshavenogender.”
The teachers said they noticed some positive response from the students through their efforts, however, they believe this change is only the tip of the iceberg.
Mikel Gomez, a student who was expelled from school in November for wearing a skirt , shared a video on tiktok to explain that he did so in support of feminism. In support of Mikel , teacher Jose Piñas wore a skirt to work. “I want to join the cause of the student, Mikel, who has been expelled and sent to the psychologist for going to class with a skirt.”
While some have criticized the actions of the teachers, considering them unnecessary, many have offered their support to the students and teachers alike.
