Italy beat England in a penalty shootout with 3-2 and won the home team’s first title after 55 years.
Italy continued to win 34 consecutive victories, beating England in the final of the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2020), which went into a penalty shootout after a 1-1 scoreline after extra time at the Wembley Stadium in London. Italy defeated England with 3-2 as England missed 3 penalties in the shootout. The loss for the home team meant their hunt for a second major title after their 1966 World Cup (55 years ago) and therefore the first European title continues.
For Italy, this is the second European title since 1968 and the first major title since winning the World Cup in 2006. This is their second final in the past three Euro editions. The high-octane clash between the teams started with England taking the lead in the 2nd minute of the match.
However, the initial intensity in the English side fell and that they weren’t able to create many chances. In the second half, Italy took control of the match and began threatening England goalpost. The turning point for Italy came in the 67th minute of the match after defender Leonardo Bonucci scored a goal from close range.
Italy’s undefeated run continues under manager Roberto Mancini. They have remained unbeaten in 34 matches since September 2018. Since Mancini came to power, he has turned the team from the lowest point of missing the bus for the 2018 World Cup. Italy is a complete team currently with efficiency as their key feature. With the following World Cup to take place in 2022, Italy will hope to continue their form.
This is a huge disappointment for England. Since the 1966 World Cup, they have never been so close to the title. In the history of the tournaments, their home country has only won three tournaments. In the 2016 EURO Cup, the host France also lost to Portugal in the final.
Many people will say that the team is overconfident, but it is undeniable that the team is on the rise, reaching the semi-finals in the 2018 World Cup, finals in EURO Cup this year and there is another World Cup next year. The team did not perform to their level in the final, but the team is full of young and smart talents, many of whom have already shined at the club stage.
This year may not be the England team, but they should learn from this defeat and start preparing and dreaming for next year’s World Cup.
