From Siri to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) has been growing rapidly. But is the growth beneficial for us or is it secretly destroying our society?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines programmed to think like humans and perform tasks like them. We have often seen movies portraying AI as robots with human-like characteristics. And although that is not far from the truth, AI can range from Google Search to autonomous weapons to IBM’s Watson.
Artificial Intelligence today is known as Narrow AI or Weak AI. That is because it is designed to perform narrow tasks like performing facial recognition or internet searches or driving a car. General AI (AGI) or Strong AI which hasn’t been created yet, would outperform humans in every cognitive task i.e. tasks that need long-term memory or logic and reasoning.
One of the reasons why this could happen is because we, as humans feel emotions and often tend to take decisions based on emotions rather than logic and reasoning. While AI, being a machine wouldn’t feel emotions.
So, is AI harmful to the human race? Only time will tell. There are however two schools of thought. The first who believe that AI will benefit the world and make our lives easier than they are now. The other believes that AI is will lead to the ultimate doom of the human race.
The ones who believe that AI will flourish the world, believe that the robots and machines and software that are built will be under the control of humans and will lead to world to prosperity and betterment.
There are however a few concerns. Like how robots will replace humans in every industry once AGI is created. This will lead to unemployment. Not only that, one robots become efficient, the only ones who will get jobs are the ones who have the skills required for the creation of robot. There will also be a power shift when this happens. The ultimate power will be with those who control the mechanism.
There is also the possibility of creating an autonomous killing machine that could destroy the world and bring it to its eternal death.
